The romance with filmmaking begins at the age of 7, acting in the series "Tail Skirt" (TV Globo - 1984, directed by Walter Avancini) as Maninho, the son of the traveling salesman Quequé (Ney Latorraca) and Eleuzinha (Dinah Sfat) .
After attend engineering in Aeronautics Technological Institute, Oceanography at UERJ and film in Brooks Institue of Photography (USA), forms in journalism at the University Gama Filho. Still in college, working on independent producers as underwater videographer, cinegrafisra, reporter and TV shows image editor, documentaries and commercials.
In 2004, he wrote and directed his first and only digital shortfilm: "The Party", which is selected for the 1st Belém Film Festival. In 2004 travels to cover the Athens Paralympics Games as video-reporter and editor. Returning to Brazil, writes and edits the documentary "Brazil in Athens Paralympic Games 2004", that is shown on SporTV channel.
In 2005, Rodrigo produces and directs his first documentary, "Behind a last scene," the production of which becomes managing partner for the next ten years. As TVa2 Productions director, he performs several works as director and screenwriter, from commercial, films, music shows and TV shows.
In 2009 he produces and directs his second documentary, "Hey, you - Haiti before the earthquak" recorded in exactly 30 days before the Haiti earthquake that destroyed the capital Port au Prince. The film is displayed prominently in the GNT and GNT Channel in HD GNT.Doc range.
In 2010, he releaseds his third documentary: "Smoke Screen", which is first shown at the 2010 Rio International Film Festival 2010. The pioneering film, seen as bold and audacious, is produced without any sponsorship via tax incentive laws. The collective production reaps the laurels in the most famous film festivals in the world, it is widely shared on social networks and appears in several events in Brazil followed by discussions with the director. Smokescreen is choosen among 11 other docs that can chande ones vision of the world, next to The Corporation and Food Inc., and influence the direction of drug policy movement in Brazil in an unprecedented way.
In 2012, Rodrigo Mac Niven directs and writes an international co-production with TVa2 Productions, Canal Futura and TV/e from London, the reality-doc series "Life Apps" program, aired in Brazil, England, Aljazeera TV and other channels.
Also in 2012, he released his fourth documentary, "Armed", reinforcing its hard-hitting style of filmmaking. The movie is screened in festivals around the world and wins prizes.
In 2014, he releases his fifth film, the docudrama "The Trigger", which once again strikes the conformit of common sense about the discussions of public security in Brazil. The film premiere at the 2014 Rio International Film Festival, runs many festivals in the world, is shown in TV and is uploaded in Youtube for the world to see.
In 2016, Rodrigo Mac Niven launches Olympia2016, a bold political thriller about corruption, politics and mega sporting events. Again, innovating in language and embodiment, the director surprises presenting a blunt film, consonant with the political situation of the country and the world, with particular emphasis on key issues to life in big cities.
That same year, in recognition of his film work that has contributed decisively in key discussions, he receives the Medal Pedro Ernesto, the main tribute given by Rio de Janeiro to who stands out most in the Brazilian and international society.

A relação com audiovisual tem início ainda aos 07 anos, na série “Rabo de Saia” da TV Globo (1984, direção de Walter Avancini) atuando no papel de Maninho, filho do caixeiro viajante Quequé (Ney Latorraca) e Eleuzinha (Dinah Sfat).
Após cursar engenharia no Instituo Tecnológico da Aeronáutica, Oceanografia na UERJ e cinema no Brooks Institue of Photography (EUA), se forma em jornalismo na Universidade Gama Filho. Ainda na faculdade, trabalha em produtoras independentes como cinegrafista subaquático, cinegrafisra, repórter e editor de imagens de programas de TV, documentários e comerciais.
Em 2004, escreve e dirige seu primeiro e único curta-digital de ficção: “A Festa”, que é selecionado para o 1o Festival de Cinema de Belém. Também em 2004 viaja para cobrir as Paraolimpíadas de Atenas como vídeo-repórter e editor. No retorno ao Brasil, roteriza e edita o documentário “O Brasil nos Jogos Paraolímpicos de Atenas 2004”, exibido no canal SporTV.
Em 2005, Rodrigo produz e dirige seu primeiro documentário: “Por trás de uma última Cena”, pela produtora da qual se torna sócio-diretor pelos próximos dez anos. Na TVa2 Produções realiza diversos trabalhos como diretor e roteirista, desde comerciais, filmes corporativos, shows e programas de TV.
Em 2009 produz e dirige o seu segundo documentário: “Ei, you – O Haiti antes do terremoto”, gravado no Haiti exatos 30 dias antes do terremoto que destruiu a capital Porto Príncipe. O filme é exibido com destaque no Canal GNT e GNT HD na faixa GNT.Doc
Em 2010, ele lança seu terceiro documentário: “Cortina de Fumaça”, que é exibido pela primeira vez no Festival Internacional de Cinema do Rio 2010. O filme, pioneiro e tido como atrevido e audacioso, é realizado sem qualquer patrocínio via leis de incentivo fiscal. A produção coletiva colhe os louros pelos festivais de cinema mais badalados do mundo, é amplamente compartilhado nas redes sociais e é exibido em diversos eventos pelo Brasil seguidos de debates com o diretor. Cortina de Fumaça é escolhido entre 11 docs capazes de mudar nossa visão de mundo, ao lado de outros fimes como The Corporation e Food Inc, e influencia os rumos do movimento pela reforma da política de drogas no Brasil.
Em 2012, Rodrigo Mac Niven dirige e escreve uma coprodução internacional entre a TVa2 Produções, o Canal Futura e a TV/e de Londres, no programa reality “Life Apps”, exibido no Brasil, Inglaterra, na TV Aljazeera e outros canais.

Em 2016, Rodrigo Mac Niven lança Olympia 2016, um thriller político ousado sobre corrupção, política e mega eventos esportivos.
